So 2012 is almost over and here is a list of my favorite albums of 2012. There are 22 albums total (I could have listed a lot more but got tired lol) 11 Hiphop albums, 3 R&B, 1 Pop and 7 Rock albums.

Kendrick Lamar “Good Kid Mad City”

This would be my pick as the best overall album of 2012. All the guest appearances on the album fit perfectly. The skits fit into the overall story perfectly as well. The only “flaw” to me is the chorus on “Real” to me it is just annoying and repetitive. This album will be heralded as a “classic” years from now.

Frank Ocean “Channel Orange”

While this album is not as good as his “Nostalgia” mixtape/album it is still great. Probably the best R&B album of the year as well. And the album has a guest appearance from Andre 3000 which you can never go wrong with!

Deftones “Koi No Yokan”

Ok so maybe i’m a little biased with this pick since the Deftones are one of my favorite bands of all time. Then again this is MY favorite albums of 2012 list so yeah. Chino’s voice is great as always. Mix of hard rock to more mild mellow tracks.

Nas “Life is Good”

On his 11th studio album Nas delivers one of his best efforts. As probably the greatest rapper of all time he always delivers lyrically but usually his albums do not have the best production. The production on this album however is greatness. Kendrick Lamar’s album just slightly edges this album out for best Hiphop album of the year.

Jack White “Blunderbuss”

I do enjoy me some White Stripes. When Jack White decided to do a solo album I knew I’d like it before I heard it. Great rock album!

Ab-Soul “Control System”

For those that do not know Ab-Soul is a member of the same group as Kendrick Lamar called Black Hippy and under the same label (TDE) with Schoolboy Q and Jay Rock. This has one of my favorite songs of 2012 “Illuminate” with Kendrick Lamar.

Killer Mike “R.A.P.”

Produced by El-P this album is great both lyrically and beat wise.

The Smashing Pumpkins “Oceania”

Their 8th studio album and a great one.

Lana Del Rey “Born to Die”

Yes, you read correctly…. Lana Del Rey. Love this album… she has a 50′s sound to her voice with the vulgarity of 2012 lol. Great pop album overall.

Apollo Brown & O.C. “Trophies”

This album is a collab between O.C. (of the D.I.T.C. crew with Fat Joe, Big L, Showbiz & AG etc.) and producer Apollo Brown. Great boom bap beats and great rhymes from the legendary O.C.

Miguel “Kaleidoscope Dream”

Another great R&B album.

Schoolboy Q “Habits and Contradictions”

Another release from the Black Hippy group and of course there are guest appearances from Kendrick Lamar.

Other great albums this year were:

Sean Price “Mic Tyson”
The Weeknd “Trilogy”
Action Bronson and Alchemist “Rare Chandeliers”
Greenday “Uno” (actually 3 albums uno, dos and tres)
Beach House “Bloom”
Gary Clark Jr. “Blak and Blu”
9th Wonder & Murs “The Final Adventure”
G.O.O.D. Music Group “Cruel Summer”
Mumford & Sons “Babel”
9th Wonder & Buckshot “The Solution”

Thoughts and Comments? What did I miss?

So it seems the West Coast is taking over Hiphop with talented new artists. Crooked I for example has been making music for years but is starting to make noise again with the signing to Eminems Shady Records along with his group Slaughterhouse. There have always been artists such as Murs, Ras Kass, Kurupt etc.. that have had huge followings in the underground. But here are some newer artists to watch for and check out!!!!

Kendrick Lamar

Pac Div

Ab-Soul

Odd Future

New album reviews……

So two albums that both come out on March 8th leaked today. I have had both on repeat for hours and so far i’m enjoying this Raekwon album more. The Lupe isn’t a terrible album but it can’t even begin to be compared to his other two classic/near classic albums “Food & Liquor” and “The Cool”. Recently in an article by Complex magazine even Lupe himself said he’s not happy about how Lasers sounds. He was told to make songs a certain way using hooks he didn’t even come up with. This album is a lot more “radio friendly” and sounds more mainstream/pop than his previous albums. It even seems like he has “dumbed” his lyrics down some. So if your a big fan of Hiphop that’s on the radio then this album may appeal to you more. He also left “i’m beaming”, “shining down” and, “go to sleep” off the album which were all better than most the songs on this album. The best tracks on the album so far to me are “beautiful lasers” and “all black everything”.

The Raekwon on the other hand is solid. It can’t be compared his last album “only built for cuban linx 2” but it’s still got some great tracks. It also seems like Raekwon has been on a lotttttt of other peoples albums lately such as Kanye West, Currensy, Freeway, Twista, Paul Wall, Rick Ross and even a track with Justin Bieber! Which by the way was a great song.

The standout tracks on this album thus far are “Rich & Black” featuring Nas, “Master of Our Fate” f. Black Thought from The Roots, “Ferry Boat Killaz”.

I was anticipating buying the Lupe album when it drops on March 8th but now I’m leaning more towards the Raekwon album. Also on March 8th Reks drops his album…. more on that later!

comments welcome……….
